today a Friend and I both happened to have the day off from work/school so we decided to do a little hunting. It's been raining here non stop for the past 4 days and the cow pastures at some of the local dairies have flooded leaving large puddles of water 2-3 feet deep smack dab in the middle of the fields. Mallards and Wigeons especially love to feed in these puddles. Wednesday night we scouted and found a puddle holding 60-70 mallards and Wigeons. Got to the dairy around 6:00 (shooting time was 6:50) we set out the the spread consisting of 10 GHG fullbody mallards,2 prograde mallard sleepers and 6 pro grade green wing teal. The blind was constructed of chicken wire with camo mesh netting covering the sides with mixed brush and branches to conceal it better. No sooner had we set the decoys been set out and we had taken our seats in the blind then the birds came piling in. The first group was 15 mallards it was about 10 minutes until legal shooting time so we let them sit in the decoys when it was finally shooting time they had mixed right into the spread. We popped up and ended up with four birds belly up in the water. After we retrieved the birds a small flock of 6 wigeons circled and bombed into the decoys after a couple of shots we ended up with three. After a few more small flocks, singles and pairs we added 6 more mallards to the bag. My friend had his limit and I needed one more bird to complete mine. We waited and after 10-15 minutes of waiting a single came in and I finished out my limit with a shoveler.
