A couple of weeks ago I got a letter from the University of Idaho stating that I was invited to Vandal Friday which is a  new student orientation/registration day. I talked to my dad into making the five hour drive with me and he suggested we get there a couple of days early and  do a little turkey hunting. My dad's freind Scott was in Colfax on business and did a little scouting a few days before hand. My dad and I left Enumclaw at midnight on Wednesday so we could make it to Colfax before shooting light on opening day. Full of Energy drink and Coffee we headed over to the Spot where 12 Gobblers had been spotted in a wheat field the day before. We arrived at the farm around 5:00am and as we were gathering our things an owl hooted in the distance and the woods rang out with gobbles in just about every direction.Things were looking good.My dad and I headed up the hill on an old dirt bike trail and settled in right where the woods met a large wheat field. The Turkey continued to Gobble everytime and owl would hoot or a pheasant would cackle. Finally it began to get light. I made a couple of hen clucks that were immediately answered by several gobbles I kept this up for awhile but nothing ever showed up. We could see a Gobbler strutting on the opposite hillside aout 200 yards away but he payed us no attention. My dad and I finally Agreed to move our setup a hundred yards or so down an when we got up I stood face to face with a gobbler who was about 30 yards away he quickly ducked down over the edge of the hill and was half way down the hill and across the road by the time I made it to where he stood before. Then I heard a shot on the opposite hillside where the tom was strutting. After the shot the birds shut up and wouldn't answer. We decidd to pack up and had into town for some breakfast and a nap and try again later.

After our break we wen't to a different spot and found a lot of turkey sign right at the edge of a wheat field. We called the farmer and he said about 40 turkeys have been roostin in the tall pines at the fields edge lately. We decided to leave the birds alone and try for them in the morning. The next morning I had to be in Idaho for Vandal Friday by 8:30 so we had to make this hunt a quick one. We set up about 200 yards away from where the birds were roosting and got several toms to gobble. As daylight broke 3 shots rang out right where the birds where roosting and where the gobbles where  coming from. But I continued to hear birds moving around at the bottom of the hill we were set up on. I continued to call and would occasionally get an answer from a gobbler or a couple of clucks from a hen. The gobbles got closer and closer and closer I started to soften up my calling and then Boom!!!!!! a shot rang out about 40 yard to the right of our set up we stood up to see what was going on and it turns out Scott had set up about 40 yards to the right of us mistakenly. He said a group of five Jakes had come up the hill out of the river bottom and saw his decoy ad he was able to take a nice Jake.By that time it was time to head out for Vandal Friday. I was glad someone in our group was able to take a bird.
