Well today is Monday October 11 2010 and Saturday October 9 2010 was opening day here in Southern Oregon for ducks and geese, so both Saturday and Sunday morning was full of hunters and not many birds around worth shooting. So I decided to do a Solo hunt with me and my dog Ruger, we went out to a little lake in Klamath Falls Oregon and I put the boat in the tulies after setting out 1.5 dozen Mallard decoys, 1 dozen pintail decoys and 1/2 dozen coot decoys and 1 dozen honker decoys. I finished setting up my decoys about 15 minutes before shooting time started so this being my dogs first hunt ever I decided to throw his bumper out into the decoys a few times to let him get the hang of things. Well shortly before it was light enough to shoot I quit and got Ruger all set up in the boat, Right after he was all ready I heard some wings lock out in the distance but didnt see anything because the fog was so thick. About 20 yards out from the end of my spread I see a flock of WIdgeon coming in to land, i took a quick look at the time and realized it was time to shoot, so I pulled up and picked my bird witch was a nice drake, and pull the trigger, and to my surprise I watch 3 birds fall, full of excitement i send my dog out to get the birds, he went and retrived 2 of the 3 because I had to kill the third one, so we get back in the boat get all situated again and here come 2 pintail right at us over the decoys at about 15 yards and I pulled up and shot twice and they both fell, one drake pintail and one hen. Ruger is ready to go to work so I sent him out and he brought me back both. Then we sat and waited a little bit and a single drake mallard flew over and I pulled up and boom boom boom..... as he continued to fly away, as Ruger looks at me like C'mon man! So I tell him I was a bad shot and I would get the next one, well we waited a little while and nothing, so I am out of the boat standing on the island looking behind us, and when I turn around here are 2 mallards flying right at me, as I raise my gun up I almost hit the little hen and I swung my gun over to shoot the drake and did with one shot and by the time I got to the hen she was flying over the middle of my decoys and one shot echoed thru the fog and the hills as she fell to the water and Ruger was off to work again. So all in all today was a good day to go out, oregon limit is 7 ducks and got all 7 ducks in less than an hour, and the best part was I only shot 8 times for 7 ducks. I will add pictures here shortly | |
