Well, for our second day hunt we took out JP's younger sister. She had just gotten her license a few days before the hunt and was, well, inexperienced with placing shots. Saturday night we went through about 8 targets until we got semi-comfortable with her shooting. Then we shot about 15 minutes north and arrived at our destination. 4am came and we went to our spot, brushed up our blind, placed our decoys and waited for the first gobbles of the morning. Soon enough, the woods came alive. We listened to about a half-hour's worth of roost gobbling until we knew the birds were on the ground. The talk begin to taper off and we knew the big birds were headed the opposite direction of us. We sat it out and about 10 minutes went by when we saw a couple birds strutting, one was a nice jake with almost a full fan, so we kept an eye on him. It took about five minutes for them to work their way to us, when the biggest jake finally offered a shot, Jamie winged him, I don't even know if I can say that, she lower winged him. At first I was excited because he did a circle and sat down about 10 yards farther out, he was still very much alive, but a sitting duck. Jamie relaxed and took another pop at the motionless jake. Ground. There was no more shots from there, my glimmer of hope was crushed at that point as we watched him flap with one wing and dead sprint 100 yards down the field and into the woods. After the four of us fanned out and spent an hour pushing through the woods he ran into and reviewed the video, we concluded the shot was nowhere near fatal. It's always tough to leave a bird that was hit, but we could not find blood, not even feather, there wasn't even blood where he was shot, only 3 feathers. At the very least, Jamie enjoyed the experience and plans to be back at it for the regular season. | |
